Measurement of surface tension by lattice parameter changes : theory for facetted microcrystals
نویسنده
چکیده
A number of workers have estimated surface tensions of solids from measurements of the differences in the lattice parameters of bulk crystals and microcrystals. The data are then analysed by an expression valid only for spherical. isotropic microcrystals. Real microcrystals are usually facetted, resulting in a number of possible problems which are discussed here. The main results given are : (i) A general expression for the change in volume of a microcrystal for an arbitrarily anisotropic surface tension and arbitrary crystal habit; common special cases are also given; and (ii) a discussion of the relation between the volume change and the change in x-ray lattice parameter. This includes the effects of the dispersions in crystalline sizes and shapes. and the possible non-uniformity in internal strain produced. The main conclusion is that errors are likely to be modest, almost certainly less than a few tens of percent.

Lennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory
By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT) based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...

In this study, thin layers of titanium nitride (TiN) were deposited on H13 steel substrates at different duty cycles and temperature of 520 ˚C using plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD). Uniaxial residual stress was calculated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Sin2 Ψ method. Then the residual stress of the samples were measured by Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXRD) method and...

In this paper the dynamic of a droplet on a surface with a hole is investigated under gravitational effect by using lattice Boltzmann method. Incompressible two-phase flow with high density ratio proposed by Lee is considered. Cahn’s theory is used to observe the wettability of the surface in contact with liquid and gas phases. Several parameters such as contact angle, surface tension and gravi...

Through this study, the ability of a modified Peng-Robinson (MPR) equation of state in predicting the surface tension of n-alkanes based on the density functional theory approach was investigated and compared with other studies. The interfacial layer thickness and the density profile were calculated simultaneously at different temperatures from triple point to near critical point using the modi...

Abstract In this paper interparticle potential model of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to simulate deformation and breakup of a falling droplet under gravity force. First this model is applied to ensure that the surface tension effect is properly implemented in this model. Two tests have been considered. First, it has been checked an initial square drop in a 2D domain can freely def...
